Just because Google has won the PR war, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t advertise on Yahoo or Bing, and here’s why…
If there is one thing that really bugs me, it’s the way modern references are forced into films and TV shows. Really forced blatant mentions of Facebook, Twitter and other such things really make me cringe.
I’m sure we’ve all seen a scene similar to this on TV, where the lead character doesn’t know how to solve their problem, and then the best mate suggests, “Well… why don’t you just Google it?”
And somewhere… you can hear Yahoo and Bing softly cry in the background. Really… Bing has no reason to complain… but Yahoo? Get stuffed! They were here first before Google!
How come you don’t hear anyone say “hey why don’t you just Yahoo it?” How come Yahoo or Bing aren’t allowed a movie about themselves starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson?!?
Here’s the important point…
Today when people say they want to search for something on the internet, most people say they “Googled it”. Hats off over to them, because it’s helped Google to dominate the search engine market.
Let’s not forget the other buddy cop duo, Yahoo and Bing.
One of the biggest mistakes you as a small business owner can make, is to setup your Google PPC advertising, make money from it, and then just…. stop.
Because Yahoo and Bing also do PPC advertising, and just because so many of your competitors are too ignorant to advertiseon them, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t either.
In fact, because Yahoo and Bing are less popular with advertisers, there’s a huge opportunity here…
- There are less people to compete against…
- AND the cost per click is generally less.
“But why should I advertise on Yahoo and Bing if Google is SOOOOOOO big?!?”
Look… I get it. Google is massive. It’s huge. They are the giantest, biggest, fattest momma in the room.
But as big and scary as they are… Google isn’t as big as you might think.
Back in April 2013, Google accounted for only 66.5% of all search traffic.* Okay that sounds like that much, but another way to look at it is that if you ONLY advertise on Google, you’re NOT advertising to 33.5% of the audience.
Let me put it this way for you…
You can increase your advertising audience by 50% by advertising on all search engines! That is a HUGE amount of people you are missing out on!
Imagine advertising to 50% more people simply by taking your effective PPC adverts from Google and duplicating them onto other search engines like Yahoo and Bing.
If you already have a Google adwords account, you can duplicate your adverts easily onto Yahoo and Bing.
When I first started advertising on Yahoo… I had to manually add all my adverts into Yahoo AGAIN! It was a real bore.
Thankfully though, both Yahoo and Bing know they are second to Google, and therefore have setup some easy to use systems where you can literally copy your Google ads into your Yahoo and Bing accounts easily.
In other words… there’s no excuse for not moving over your successful Google PPC ad campaigns. 😛
However… I will give you this one word of advice.
Moving your best converting adverts to Yahoo and Bing is (85% of the time) a winning plan, however please note that Yahoo and Bing do have a slightly different demographic. In other words, if an advert in Google Adwords has a conversion rate of 12%, it will likely vary slightly in Yahoo and Bing.
In a nutshell, Yahoo tends to have a slightly older demographic, whilst Bing sees a higher percentage usage from African and Hispanic users. **
So by all means, set up your adverts from scratch for the new audience if you have the time, but chances are the differences in result will be minor, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
So should a small business use Yahoo and Bing’s PPC advertising?
OH GOD YES!
As I mentioned, by advertising on search programs outside of Google, you can effectivelyincrease your audience by 50% overnight.
In fact, it’s PERFECT for small business as it allows you to make some very significant growth with little to no effort whatsoever. It would be like winning ‘World Biggest Loser’ simply by sitting on the sofa.
Look at it this way… if your business made $10,000 last month, well guess what, you could make $15,000 THIS month. Not too shabby huh? I’d kill for a 50% increase of income overnight too!
Right… so this is what YOU (yes YOU) are going to do next.
- If you haven’t already, go setup your Google Adwords account. I’ve written an amazing blog post on this last week for you which you can find right here: Google Adwords for Small Businesses.
- Once you have a few months worth of Google PPC data under your belt (and you can identify which adverts are profitable and which arn’t) go setup your Yahoo and Bing Advertising accounts.
- Finally transfer your Google Adwords into your Yahoo and Bing accounts.
- Sit back and watch the new enquiries come rolling through the front door 🙂
Remember… by duplicating your adverts from Google to other search engines, you can practically increase the range of your advertising message by as much as 50%!
