Creating a Facebook Page For a Business

Getting Started, Social Media 0 Comments 14 Views 0 Like

If you’re familiar with Facebook already, you’ll probably find the process of setting up a page fairly straightforward. But, for those of you who are new to Facebook, this can be an overwhelming task. It’s pretty painless so don’t worry. Creating a Facebook page for a business is simple enough if you just follow these 3 simple steps.

Before we begin, it’s important to note there are three types of pages on Facebook. They are:

  • Personal profiles
  • Groups
  • Business Pages

Profiles are for people. Pages are for businesses. Now let’s get started!

Step 1: Firstly, create your own personal Facebook profile.

Note: If you’ve already got a personal profile, jump ahead to Step 2.

Go to and fill in your details under the ‘Sign up’ section. Follow the step-by-step guide and you can’t go wrong.

Make sure you fill out your profile with your real name and other details, – remember your profile is always about you, not your business. It violates Facebook rules to have a business profile (or more than one profile), so you risk getting deleted. Besides, a person profile allows your friends to find you more easily (and your friends will probably be your first business fans!).

Step 2: Now create your Facebook business page.

Click on the ‘Create a Page’ link on the Facebook website.

If you’re a small business, chances are you want to choose the ‘Local Business or Place’option for your new business page. Follow the steps and complete the fields shown below.

If you’re not already logged in you will have to do so before you can create your page.

Congratulations, you just created your very own Facebook business page! Now let’s get to work optimising it so you can reap the benefits of using Facebook in business.

Important Note: You cannot change your business name once you create your page so make sure you choose wisely. If you want to change it down the track, you’ll have to delete your page and start all over again.

Step 3: Fill in your basic information.

Here’s what you’ll see when you first create your business page.

Upload your logo

First of all, you can upload your logo or what’s called a “profile picture” image to your page. Make sure that when you upload your image you edit the thumbnail so that when you post comments, your logo isn’t cropped and illegible.  You can do this by hovering over your image and clicking ‘change picture’, then click on the ‘Edit Thumbnail’ link displayed below your image.

It’s a good idea if you have the budget to get a designer to design you a profile picture to look more professional. Here are some examples we’ve designed as part of our Facebook Design packages:

Now enter your business information

Make sure you enter all your relevant business information on your info tab, including a link to your website, your business phone number and location. Write about what you do and what makes you different and make sure you use your keywords also so people can find you.

It’s a good idea to list your own name and personal profile too – that way customers know where to contact you while on Facebook (or you can create your own contact tab).

It’s a good idea to also add some images to your page of your products or related services. They’ll appear at the top of your Facebook ‘wall’. It can really enhance the look of your page. Here’s a page that sells canvas prints and has uploaded a gallery of their different art collections.

Invite your friends

Your friends will probably be your first fans so invite them to ‘like’ your new business page.

 Post a status update

Once your page is all set up, add a status update. Make sure you post a regular status update, at least once every few days.

Now promote your new Facebook page and profit

You’re now ready to start promoting your new Facebook page for business and if you follow these simple steps you’ll look ultra professional. Make sure you add the Facebook logo and even their Like Box to your website to increase your fan count.

Creating a Facebook page for a business is not hard. You might even find it fun. As much as you shouldn’t worry about your fan count, it is exciting watching it go up every day.

Start engaging with your audience, and remember, try not to ‘sell’ all the time. It’s a social medium so follow the 80/20 rule: 80% social networking and 20% selling.
